*A total of 208 000 people living in South Africa lost their jobs between the last quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009. The job losses occurred in both the formal (88 000) and the informal sector (96 000).

The number of people unemployed between the fourth quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009 increased by 311 000.

Of the 311 000 people who became unemployed in the first quarter of 2009, 158 000 had lost their jobs, followed by new entrants (106 000) into unemployment.

47 000 more people joined the ranks of the discouraged work-seekers between the fourth quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009.
